At Lyrebird Health, we believe that technology should empower healthcare professionals rather than burden them. To test this, we recently partnered with Ochre Health to evaluate how AI transcription tools can impact the daily workflows of GPs. The results, gathered through a series of surveys from 45 doctors across three practices in the ACT and Tasmania, offer valuable insights into the role of AI in general practice.

Survey Overview

The study involved GPs trialling Lyrebird’s AI transcription tool over four months, with 40% choosing to adopt it after the trial. These practices, which ranged from urban centres to rural locations, provided a diverse perspective on how AI could fit into their workflows.

The study focused on several hypotheses:

1. AI transcription could reduce doctors’ cognitive load and stress.

2. It could save time, allowing for either more patient care or improved work-life balance.

3. It could enhance the quality and accuracy of medical records, including medico-legal documentation.

Here’s what we found.

Key Findings

1. Time Savings and Reinvesting in Care

• Over 80% of Lyrebird users reported saving 2+ minutes per patient.

• Most of these doctors chose to use the saved time to focus on improving patient care, highlighting the tool’s ability to enhance doctor-patient interactions.

2. Stress Reduction

• Doctors using the tool reported a 12% reduction in stress levels, compared to a 6% reduction in the non-user group.

• This supports the idea that automating repetitive tasks can alleviate some of the mental load that comes with clinical work.

3. Enhanced Documentation

• GPs who used the tool noted measurable improvements in the quality and detail of their medical records.

• This was mirrored in increased confidence regarding medico-legal documentation, a critical concern in modern practice.

4. Doctor Feedback

• The doctors who adopted Lyrebird’s tool were more likely to feel that traditional data entry—typing and using a mouse—was getting in the way of patient care.

• They described the AI tool as a valuable support system that reduced time spent on paperwork, allowing them to focus more on their patients.

Challenges and Learnings

While most doctors saw clear benefits, a small percentage (20%) reported little to no time savings. Feedback suggests this was due to time spent proofreading and reordering AI-generated notes, highlighting an opportunity for further refinement. This constructive feedback is already guiding Lyrebird’s ongoing development to make the tool even more intuitive.

Looking Ahead

The survey was conducted without Lyrebird’s integration with Best Practice Premier, which enhances accessibility and efficiency for practices using the platform.

Moving forward, Lyrebird is developing features such as automated mental health care plans and GP management plans within Best Practice to further reduce administrative burdens and deliver greater value to clinicians.

Additionally, another survey will be completed to assess the impact of the integration.

Final Thoughts

This study reaffirms the potential of AI in healthcare, particularly for reducing stress, improving documentation, and giving GPs the time to do what they do best: care for their patients. At Lyrebird, we remain committed to listening to our users and evolving our technology to meet their needs.

If you’re curious about how AI transcription can work for your practice, we’d love to hear from you. Together, we can continue shaping the future of healthcare.
